Yorkshire tea advantages
Yorkshire Tea is grown in more than twenty different locations across India and Africa, then imported to Harrogate and combined – so why it is known as Yorkshire Tea?
If you drank one of those twenty teas on its own, it would actually be described in terms of its origin – Assam Tea, for instance, or Rwandan Tea, Kenyan tea and so on.
But blends from different origins need to be named more creatively. Take Russian Caravan, for example, a popular blend of Keemun, oolong, and Lapsang Souchong which is made it is way from China to Russia on eighteen-century camel caravans.
It was not extremely practical to call it Oolong Keemun Lapsang Souchong, so instead, it was named after its trade way.
In the UK, there is a more familiar example: English Breakfast.
When tea traders required to sell the last scraps of their different teas from around the planet, they combined them all and sold them as a blend.
There was no promise of standard, consistency, flavour or origin but the item still required a name.
So it became the defining example of a mix together named after the location it was created, and the market it was created for.
English Breakfast tea caught on, and its composition became pretty more refined and standardised.
Finally, it inspired most of the black tea combines Brits drinks today.
In the early twenty-century, where the water supply was less uniform than it is today, we used to make individual combines for each customer at our flagship store in Harrogate.
And so, in the 1970s, we created a black tea blend mainly for the water supply in Yorkshire and sold only in Yorkshire.
In the best tradition of English Breakfast, we named it Yorkshire Tea.
Over the years, a liking of our brew spread well beyond those regional borders, which is why it is now sold everywhere in England, and in lots of other nations too.
